Mara Elephant Pro
Mara Elephant Project
MEP (Mara Elephant Project) works to protect elephants and their habitat in the Masai Mara National Reserve (Kenya). 1. Poaching: In 2011, some parts of Africa reported the highest poaching levels on record, with 96 elephants poached in the Greater Mara Ecosystem in 2012. Researchers estimate that 38,000 elephants are killed annually to supply the illegal ivory trade. 2. Conflict: In 2015, the human population around the Masai Mara was reported to be growing at 10.5% per year, more than three times the global average. Population growth means more settlements, permanent buildings, crop-based agriculture, fenced areas, wildlife poaching and deforestation. Ecosystem fragmentation and the associated fencing are cutting off important wildlife corridors, rapidly accelerating human-wildlife conflict. We are trying to zone the area so that land use around the Mara is compatible with wildlife conservation. 3. Habitat protection: No habitat is more important for elephants than Kenya's forests. They often act as water towers for Kenya's major rivers and lakes. We work to protect this important habitat, such as in the Mau, Loita and Nyakweli forests. Tutima Glashütte supports the MEP (Mara Elephant Project).
